Bold move covers emissions from scopes 1, 2 & 3

Allwyn today has pledged to become a net zero carbon company by 2030 or sooner, and with it hopes of becoming the world’s first net zero lottery company. The firm, which is an applicant for the fourth UK National Lottery licence, is aligning itself with the UN Race to Zero and has signed the Planet Mark Zero Carbon Commitment to pledge to achieve net zero.

The key steps that Allwyn will take to achieve its net zero by 2030 goal include:

  • Net Zero in Operations by 2030 and new sites from day one.
  • A net zero supply chain by 2030, earlier if possible, with the support of key partners.
  • The creation of an affordable renewable energy scheme for all its retail partners.
  • By 2025 all Allwyn suppliers to report on their carbon emissions and share their plans to reduce.
  • Zero waste to landfill by 2030, by which time all single use plastic, (more than a billion items per annum), will be removed from its supplychain.
  • All paper sourcing to be 100% FSC certified and all Allwyn vehicles to be zero emissions.
  • 20% of Exec remuneration linked to wider social value commitments including net zero.

Sir Keith Mills, Allwyn Chairman said:

“Combatting climate change is the issue of our generation. Every human activity creates carbon emissions – even buying a lottery ticket. Addressing that, achieving net zero, is not someone else’s problem, it is everyone’s responsibility. Business has a vital role to play.”

David Craven, Allwyn CEO said:

“By 2030 or sooner, Allwyn will deliver the world’s first net zero lottery operations. Where we can, we will share our learnings to help other national lottery operators around the world achieve a similar result.”

Steve Malkin, Planet Mark founder and CEO said:

“We are delighted Allwyn are making a net zero commitment with the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign, the world's largest coalition of organisations committed to reducing their carbon emissions across all scopes in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.

Planet Mark are official partners of the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign and our pledge is to amplify the critical message to businesses that the climate crisis requires urgent action. Collectively, we need to do more, and by organisations joining the net zero journey and realising their plans and ambitions to take them over the finishing line, going beyond making the pledge, we will see the UK net zero targets being reached.

No matter what stage a business is at on its net zero journey, from setting a baseline, to a target, to creating the action plan needed to get there, Planet Mark is here to support all the way and we’re looking forward to supporting Allwyn on that journey.”

About Planet Mark

Planet Mark is an internationally recognised sustainability certification which recognises continuous progress, encourages action, and builds an empowered community of like-minded individuals. It is awarded to businesses, properties, new developments and projects that are committed to reducing their carbon emissions.

Companies are certified immediately when they sign up based on their commitment to sustainability progress. To keep Planet Mark, an organisation must reduce their carbon footprint every year, commit to engage their staff and commit to communicate externally.

Holders of Planet Mark deliver results that go beyond compliance, reaching new levels of sustainability and engaging their people in the process. On average, certified businesses make a 16 per cent carbon saving per employee through reductions in energy, waste, water, travel and procurement.

The Eden Project has been a close partner of Planet Mark since its launch and the relationship is fundamental, as it helps build connections with each other and the living world, exploring how they can work towards a better future. Planet Mark donates five per cent of every Business Certification fee to the charity to support new projects, education programmes and industry-specific training run by the charity.

Planet Mark is partnered with Cool Earth, the award-winning charity that works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction, to protect an acre of rainforest for every new business certificate it delivers.  Deforestation contributes up to 20 percent global CO2 emissions. The only way to halt destruction is to align the future of the rainforest with the people best placed to protect it. This means placing forest in the hands of the people who rely on its survival for their survival.

About Race to Zero

Race to Zero is the UN-backed  global campaign rallying non-state actors – including companies, cities,  regions, financial, educational, and healthcare institutions – to take  rigorous and immediate action to halve global emissions by 2030 and deliver a  healthier, fairer zero carbon world in time.

All members are  committed to the same overarching goal: reducing emissions across all scopes  swiftly and fairly in line with the Paris Agreement, with transparent action  plans and robust near-term targets.

Led by the High-Level Climate Champions for Climate  Action – Nigel Topping and Gonzalo Muñoz – Race To Zero mobilizes actors  outside of national governments to join the Climate Ambition  Alliance, which was launched at the UNSG’s Climate Action Summit  2019 by the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera.
